Since Penn State lacked a mascot, it stated that "fiercest beast of them all," who could overcome even the tiger, Mason replied creating an instant fabrication of the Nittany Lion.

Penn State continued to beat Princeton that day. Over the next few years, there was never any official vote on the adoption of Mason's "Nittany Lion" won such great support among students, fans, and alumni.

An ordinary mountain lion or cougar is what The Nittany Lion essentially is. By attaching the prefix "Nittany" to this animal, Mason gave Penn State a unique symbol, from that point no other college or university would claim this trademark.
